This week was probably the last gasp for any of the
non-playoff teams to have a chance to get back into the race, and while many
made strong showings, none made up any ground. Barring a miracle, week 17
probably locked our postseason in. Let’s see how things went.

Apparently nobody told Brett Gardner that the Empire's season is pretty much over. |
Clearly after the trade last week, the Most Interesting Team
in the World™ is completely unbeatable, and everybody should just give up now.
Oooorrrr, maybe not. Bowling Overhand was never in any danger of losing this
week, but they looked fairly mortal, particularly on the offensive side of the
ball. While their pitching was predictably unassailable, a strong but not
ridiculous offensive performance from the Empire was enough to lose the
majority of categories on that side of the ball. Add in the loss of Paul
Goldschmidt for the season with a broken hand, and I think the blueprint for
taking down Joe’s squad is out there for the other playoff teams.
MVP: Brett F’n Gardner- 5HR, 1SB, 8R. One of (if not the)
only potential 20/20 players this year, Brett Gardner’s going to be pretty
interesting to rank next season. Is this really him? Or is this the 2011 Jacoby
Ellsbury season?
LVP: Gio Gonzalez- When you draft the Wild Thing, you have
to expect that there will be bumps along the way. When, on the other hand,
Addison Reed has as many IP and a much better ERA in the same span of time,
something has gone wrong.

Both squads went for mass pitching this week, as the Wahoos
nearly hit triple digit IP but Yakety Sax managed to keep their ERA sub 3.0.
That paired with the far-too-frequent anemic Wahoos offensive output sealed the
final outcome for the Sackers.
MVP: Yu Darvish- 14IP 1.93 ERA 10.29 K/9. While Mike Minor
has disappointed, Encarnacion’s time on the DL and Darvish’s strong
performances mean the Sackers seem to have gotten the better end of this deal.
LVP: Drew Smyly- 7.20 ERA 5 IP 3.60 K/9

Seriously, this made my whole week. |
The “one team hits, the other team pitches” match-ups are
always a favorite of this author, though this wasn’t a traditional one of those
since it was more that the Vizquels couldn’t seem to put a bat on a ball. They
get kudos points for actually competing in the pitching stats with a very
strong performance from Kenny Loggins’ favorite team, but they’re going to need
to get things on track with the bats sometime soon if they want to compete on
that side of the ball. On the plus side, they now have the best team logo in
the league.
MVP: Jon Singleton- 3 HR 6 RBI .400 OBP The sometimes
inconsistent rookie really put it together in week 17, leading the offensive
charge into the…wait for it…DANGER ZONE.
LVP: Ryan Howard-
.111 OBP, SLG .080, 1/25 Hitting. I mean, what can you really say? The Phillies
are bad, and Ryan Howard is a big part of why. Omar Vizquel almost had as many
hits last week as Howard.

I'll just leave this here. Continue with what you were doing. |
A 6-6 draw is a pretty appropriate outcome for how close
this matchup was. Only 3 runs, 2 homers, and a slim margin in OBP and SLG
separated the offensive categories. Pitching was a bit more diverse, but the
DLA managed to edge out IP and QS despite losing ERA by a substantial amount.
The DLA bats are still doing what they do, but they’re going to hope to get
some more results on the mound in the future.
MVP: Matt Kemp-5HR, 9R, 1.091 SLG To quote manager Pat Rogge "he was the actual NL player of the week after putting up .458 OBP, 5 HRs, and a 1.091 SLG. kemp had one of the strongest weeks of any player this entire season." Now stop yelling at me.
LVP: AJ Burnett- 6.2
IP (in 2 starts) 10.8 ERA. Someone apparently told Burnett the Phillies were
trying to deal him, and he decided to squash any value he had. Mission
accomplished, AJ.

I mean, it feels like piling on, really, particularly after
the whole league started talking about DVD’s owner like he A) wasn’t able to
see what they were saying and B) was a chimp randomly clicking keys when he
made his trade with Joe last week, but going out the next week and losing to a team that’s
not being actively managed is some serious salt in the wound. Then you throw in
that they were on the wrong end of this week’s Tiger Blood and, well, maybe it’s
best that we just move on and forget this one happened.
MVP: Jordan Zimmerman 14.0 IP 1.29 ERA 9.00 K/9
LVP: Nelson Cruz- 1/21, 0 HR, 1 R. The trouble with having
so much of your offense tied up in one player is that, when they fall off a
cliff, your team goes down with them. Cruz had a bad week, and DVD will need
him to find his previous stroke to improve in the future.

It would have been interesting to do a before/after of this
