This week saw some very good competition throughout the
league, with no game being decided by more than 3 categories. Additionally, a
rules change was up for a vote, with interesting results.

Reports that Yu Darvish has demanded a trade to a more competitive team have been denied by the Empire's front office. |
We’ll start with the positive. The Empire stopped their skid
by pulling out a win against the struggling Demons. Their bats finally woke up,
hitting 8 homers and finally slugging over 400 for the first time in weeks.
Ok, that’s enough positives.
Going into the weekend, the Empire had a 10-2 lead,
dominating both sides of the ball. They nearly discovered a way to snatch
defeat out of the jaws of victory over the weekend, blasting an already not
that great ERA up to a staggering 6.045 with some truly disastrous pitching
performances from otherwise reliable starters like Gio Gonzalez and Kyle Lohse.
The highlight had to be Henderson Alvarez, who had previously thrown 2
no-hitters, somehow getting lit up by the otherwise completely hapless Padres.
This is a serious concern for the Empire, as the team had recently made a
number of moves to try and improve their rotation. We’ll see if this was just a
fluke week, or if things are going to bounce back.

Artist's rendition of this game. |
This was truly a fantastic match-up, showcasing the quality
of the league and serving as a pretty effective counterpoint to the Empire v.
RIP match. An argument could be made that Chris Archer lost this game for the
DLA all by himself, having an ok start early in the week and a bad start later
on to push the team ERA up to a still pretty respectable 3.064. Troy Tulowitzki’s
ridiculous pace continued, leading an offensive onslaught for the reigning
champs that only fell short of sweeping the offensive stats due to the team
effectively punting steals. Some truly brilliant pitching from staff aces Aaron
Harang and Max Scherzer won the day for Cleveland, but this battle of the
powerhouses lived up to its billing.
MVP: Max Scherzer 1.93 ERA 14IP 9.64 K/9
LVP: Grant Balfour 1ER 1IP 0S Mostly because 1 save would
have made this game a tie.

Danger Zone continued their stretch of hitting well enough
to stay alive while streaming pitchers to keep dominate from the bump. Throwing
literally twice as many innings as the Rooters, they still kept together an
impressive 2.82ERA and 1.116WHIP. 9 homers from both teams put them in the top
half for the week for power, but ultimately the Royal Rooters hurlers just
couldn’t keep up with the DZ Onslaught.

Just imagine the music playing in the background |
The Sax are flat-out running away with the AL division at
this point, and they look like a juggernaut. Slugging a gaudy 16 HR led the way
to basically a bludgeoning for the World’s Most Interesting team in terms of
hitting, despite winning steals and runs. The pitching stats were closer, with
the difference likely coming from a strong performance by the Sax relief
pitchers. The AL had better wake up fast, or that pennant race will be over by
mid-season.

To be fair, I'm pretty sure I couldn't do that with a hernia at all. |
The Vizquels capitalized on a rare stumble by No Idea this
week, taking advantage of some good but not great production from Nicole’s
squad to get a convincing win. 13 HR was some pretty convincing power, and when
paired with 10 SB makes for a potent offensive combination. Jose Reyes had a
career week, putting together 4 steals and 2 homers. No Idea’s typically strong
pitching was hurt by AJ Burnett’s hernia-fu finally running out, giving up 6 ER’s
in his outing and pushing No Idea up to an ERA of 3.266.
