Week 2 Report

Week 2 saw a number of large margins of victory, leading to the always exciting category by category tie-breaker to determine this week’s Tiger Blood winner.  Highlighted by no less than two players seriously injuring their thumbs sliding headfirst into first base, it should come as no surprise that there was a lot of strangeness this week. Let’s jump in.

I'm back, baby.
Both teams will probably hope to perform a bit better next time they face off, as neither were overwhelming on either side of the ball. The Rooters put up a strong fight on the power front, hitting 12 homers and slugging .461, but fell short in the pitching categories thanks in part to two strong outings from Yu Darvish and the large number of saves racked up by the Empire’s bullpen. It's encouraging to see the Rooters starting to head the right direction as a team, and some trades or roster moves to round them out and let them get some value from his bench first basemen may craft a strong contender out of them sooner rather than later.

MVP Yu Darvish: 1 QS, 0.00 ERA, 10.13 ERA

Pictured: A bad decision
One of the more eye-popping box score stats, this might be the game of the week just for how goofy of match it turned out to be. This game saw MET manage to put together 101 IP, possibly a league record. Carlos Beltran and Ryan Braun came alive for Matt’s team, recording 7 R and 3 HR a piece. On the other hand, non-highlights of the match included the epic 1-0 duel in the SV category, the aforementioned Josh Hamilton slide into first, and Pat cheering about stealing OBP at the last second for spite’s sake.

MVP Carlos Beltran, but only just edging out Braun with .464 OBP and .923 SLG

Do you know what nemesis means?

The World’s Most Interesting Team™ put together a strong week on both sides of the ball, easily out-pacing the rest of the league in runs, HR, and SLG.  Their offense was sparked by the awakening of Justin Upton after a bit of a slow start, that has likely left Brian wondering why Upton insists on doing this to him in the first weeks of the season every year. A low number of pitching starts may have helped by keeping Bowling Overhand’s ERA and WHIP low to take those categories as well.

MVP Justin Upton .654 OBP, 4 HR, 1.227 SLG

"My bad, Rob."

Rob’s Sackers have jumped to an strong early lead in the league standings, but reading the box I was struck by how inefficient of a week this was for his team. Case in point, it took him 40 more innings pitched to get 1 more QS. Shin Soo Choo managed to find his way to a platinum sombrero while still recording a .500 OBP for the week (my theory is he was sick, and the Rangers just found an asian guy and gave him a uniform before the game.) Mark Trumbo and Miguel Cabrera also looked very mortal, with less production than would have been expected. With a match-up against the dreaded DL All-Stars next week, Rob's going to need to see his production pick up (despite Pat's traditional insistence that his whole team is hurt so he has no chance.)

MVP Bryce Harper- .560 OBP, .667 SLG, though this was a tough week for MVPs as all of Rob’s players were good but not overwhelming

Artist's Rendition of this Matchup

-Undertaker’s defeat at Wrestlemania proved prophetic for the Demons, as they took a beating pretty much across the board in week 2. 3 of his batters recorded sub .200 OBP’s, making it a pretty easy week for NI at the dish. The real battle came in the pitching stats, which No Idea managed to edge out thanks in part to some very strong performances from veteran pitchers Mark Buhrle and CJ Wilson.

MVP CJ Wilson 15 IP, 1.80 ERA, .96 WHIP, 2QS

PS: Apologies for accidentally comparing Nicole to Brock Lesnar. I've never met her, but I have to assume she has more of a personality than the former UFC competitor and all of her digestive tract is probably intact.
